Frost Giant (Tyranny of Dragons #27) factory paint job

Back when the WizKids Icons of the Realms miniatures first came out, they already included a Frost Giant miniature in the Tyranny of Dragons set (#27). Way smaller than the later minis, they were based on the Frost Giant artworks by Conceptopolis, before the Monster Manual for 5th Edition was released in 2014. I remember that I liked the art style very much, as it felt very fresh for me. These Frost Giant is infinitely cooler than the official miniature in the D&D 3.5 era.

Also, this Frost Giant has a very light skin tone, and the overall factory paint job is really not that great. I bought two of these right when they came out. I finally decided to repaint them with all the other Frost Giants I got over the years.

Basing and Priming

The miniatures came on 2-inch bases. However, D&D Frost Giants are huge and would require 3-inch bases. So I rebased them on larger Reaper plastic bases. After getting mixed results with priming the old D&D miniatures from WizKids, I did not remove the old paint and decided against priming them. I just cleaned them up and then painted over them.

For the bases, I added sand, pebbles and twigs to get a cool landscape.

However, I modified one of the figures a little bit that they don’t look exactly the same:

  • I removed the axe arm and reattached it in another angle
  • I added a mustache over the existing beard

Painting

Of course, one idea of repainting these Frost Giants was to match them to the other Frost Giants I already painted. So I used the same color recipes for these two miniatures again: A cold blue skin tone, off-white hair/beards and warm white furs on one miniature. To make them stand apart, I used brown furs on the other miniature. Other than that, I painted them more or less the same with earth-tone browns.

On the base, I also used the Armypainter snow effect again. This stuff is really great. I painted the figures almost two years ago, but the snow still looks fresh and clean.

Here is the first, unmodified Frost Giant.

And here is the second Frost Giant with small modifications I made.

These smaller than the Frost Giants from the Storm King’s Thunder set. Here you can see a comparison with a regular sized miniature (28 mm scale).
