One of my players bought a filament 3d printer a couple of years ago. For the last episode of my Storm King’s Thunder campaign, I needed lots of gargoyles – so he used them to test printing miniatures. It was an ugly mess. But for a throw-away gargoyle encounter, it was a nice learning experience 😉

The second Empyrean (25B) from WizKids Monster Menagerie 3 is also a huge model that I wanted to convert into a Cloud Giant for my Storm King’s Thunder campaign. This time, I wanted to add more details to make the figure into a boss type NPC/monster.

The Empyreans (25A and 25B) from WizKids Monster Menagerie 3 sets are huge models (3 inch base) and are similar in height to the Cloud Giants from Storm King’s Thunder. I guess they are not very popular, because I found them only for a bargain. I decided to turn them into Cloud Giants for my campaign.

Storm King’s Thunder also involves Cloud Giants. It even starts with one in the introduction adventure. But later in the campaign, Cloud Giants come into play as adversaries. Of course, there are nice miniatures from Wizkids from the Storm King’s Thunder set. I bought two (28A and 28B) and repainted them.

The last miniature of the Frost Giants from the Reaper Miniatures Bones 3 Kickstarter for me was the Frost Giant King. It’s a heavily armored and armed Frost Giant with a stupidly large horned helmet. He fits well into the group and definitely looks like their leader.

Reaper Miniatures also released a new Frost Giant Queen model as part of their Bones 3 Kickstarter. Although I don’t have immediate plans to use her in my D&D campaigns, she fits in very well with the rest of the Frost Giant group.

There are also quite nice Frost Giant miniatures by WizKids. Unfortunately, I often dislike the factory paint job. I bought the Frost Giantess from the Storm King’s Thunder booster set (#29A) in Ebay and was surprised to find Smurfette with a sword in my mail. Other than that, the figure looks pretty cool!

Harshnagg the Grim features a prominent role as an NPC in the Storm King’s Thunder D&D campaign. WizKids has a very cool miniature for him in the Storm King’s Thunder booster line, and I had to have it. The old Frost Giant veteran features two hand axes and a cool dragon skull helmet.

Another great miniature is the Frost Giant Bodyguard with his two-handed axe by Reaper Miniatures. This guy perfectly fits into any Frost Giant war band, and I really love his greataxe!

Back when the WizKids Icons of the Realms miniatures first came out, they already included a Frost Giant miniature. Way smaller than the later minis, they were based on the Frost Giant artworks before the Monster Manual for 5th Edition was released.

Roaming the cold wastelands and stalking adventurers or serving as pets to the mighty Frost Giants, Winter Wolves have a long history in Dungeons & Dragons. They are perfect for a mixed combat encounter and I really like the figures from Reaper Miniatures for them!

My dear friends of my D&D role-playing group got me an Anycubic Photon Mono 4k 3D resin printer for my birthday in July. Now I can print my own miniatures! But with a 3D printer comes a new rabbit hole as well – I have to learn a lot about this new part of the hobby and also need lots of new tools 😉

The Fire Giants are not complete without their queen. So for this final Fire Giant post, I present Reapers new version of Vanja, Fire Giant Queen. There is no official artwork for Duke Zaltos wife, Duchess Brimskarda, but I think Vanja represents her perfectly for my Storm King’s Thunder campaign.

Duke Zalto is one of the main antagonists the players face in the Storm King’s Thunder campaign. He is the leader of the Fire Giants, and he has a devious plan to raise the station of the Fire Giants. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get my hands on the official WizKids Minature of Duke Zalto. But the new version of Reaper’s Skorg Ironskull, the Fire Giant King, shares some similarities with Zalto. So I was happy to use the Reaper miniature for the Duke.

The Fire Giant Jailor is a new miniature that was released with the huge versions of Reaper’s Fire Giants. It was part of the corresponding Reaper Bones Kickstarter, and I was in love with the figure the moment I saw it. The figure gives off the same vibe as some Fire Giant artworks in the Storm King’s Thunder book, so I used Bluferg as the keeper of Giants’ hellhounds.

Similar to the Fire Giant Bodyguard (77615) from Reaper, the “huge” version of the Fire Giant Warrior (77616) is a very nice updated version of the previous “large” Fire Giants, now using the gray bones material. The figure has a different sword compared to the original artwork and the large version, but it still looks great as a sculpt. I reduced the amount of gold on the miniature to make it look more like a standard grunt.

A couple of years ago, I painted the Fire Giants from Reaper Miniatures. These were great figures, even if they were a little small for D&D 5th edition. Apparently more people thought so, and Reaper redid these figures in the third Kickstarter. They are more or less the same figures, but at 150% the size of the older minis. Also, they are made of the new gray Bones material and have finer details. Of course I bought them and painted them for my Storm King’s Thunder campaign! Let’s start with the Fire Giant Bodyguard.

The Fire Giants in Storm King’s Thunder often use Hell Hounds as pets. These fiends breath fire and share the love for heat and fire of the Fire Giants, so can inhabit the same dungeons. They provide a nice addition to encounters with the Fire Giants. Alas, I did not find any cool Hell Hound miniatures back in 2018, when we were playing Storm King’s Thunder. Reaper has the death dogs, and I already got one in one of the Kickstarters. So I decided that my Hell Hounds would use the Death Dog miniatures!
